The winners of the 2014 APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards were announced last night at a gala event hosted in Melbourne. We are very excited to let you know that Work of the Year: Instrumental went to Mary Finsterer with her piece Aerea (2013). Aerea was commissioned, performed and recorded by the Monash Art Ensemble and proclaimed by the judges as ‘ambitious and highly engaging’.  Finsterer was nominated in two separate categories this year.

Work of the Year: Jazz  went to Paul Grabowsky for Tall Tales (2009), also recorded by the Monash Art Ensemble. Tall Tales, as the judges commented, ‘is a fine example of a sophisticated approach to large ensemble writing by an established jazz composer’.

We congratulate Mary, Paul and the Monash Art Ensemble for their fantastic work and continued dedication and commitment to Monash University and both the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, and the Monash Academy of Performing Arts.

Other winners included James Ledger, Andrew Ford, Brett Dean and Cat Hope.
